E1 catalyzes the activation of the C-terminal carboxyl group of ubiquitin by forming a high-energy thioester bond in an ATP-dependent manner. Two sources are available from A.G.Scientific: yeast and rabbit. Both enzyme sources have the same specific activity when used with human conjugating enzymes (E2s).]
