8 Anisomycin Media Applications!

Back to List

1. By inhibiting protein synthesis, anisomycin can prevent the expression of DNA. Protozoans and fungi are vulnerable to the compound, and when researchers originally discovered it in the 1950s, it was proposed for use against these infectious agents. In the lab, researchers can use anisomycin in experiments where they want to be able to inhibit DNA synthesis, for activities like isolating living organisms in culture. Laboratory suppliers with lines of biological compounds sell anisomycin intended for laboratory use through their catalogs.

Anisomycin is a biological compound naturally produced by some Streptomyces bacteria.

2. Anisomycin inhibits the activation of sexual behavior by estradiol and progesterone.
The protein synthesis inhibitor, anisomycin blocked the activation of feminine sexual behavior in rats when applied directly to the lateral portion of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus. This supports the idea that estradiol and progesterone activate sexual behavior by inducing the synthesis of specific proteins in target cells of the ventromedial nucleus.
3. Anisomycin activates JNK and sensitises DU 145 prostate carcinoma cells to Fas mediated apoptosis.
Using anisomycin, a potent JNK agonist, we have demonstrated a role for JNK in Fas mediated apoptosis in DU 145 cells. Inhibition of Caspase 8 and Caspase 9 completely inhibits this process which suggests that DU 145 cells require mitochondrial amplification of the Fas apoptotic signal.
