I openly & unapologetically admit it; I am a San Diego transplant. Born & raised in coastal Saunderstown, Rhode Island, I arrived in San Diego as a University of Massachusetts, Amherst Microbiology Graduate in the summer of 1989. I quickly secured a position at Gen-Probe’s manufacturing division growing positive and negative cultures. My primary focus was isolating the various strains of RNA & DNA to take advantage of Gen-Probe’s patented rRNA technology in diagnostics. Since its founding in 1985, Gen-Probe became one of San Diego's earliest success stories. Thus, began my personal journey and love for San Diego's Community and the exploding biotechnology marketplace.
We lost our daughter, Daly Alexandra Lindgren, to SIDS in 1999. She was 3 months old. She was down the street at daycare when I received the call. What is SIDS? SIDS is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Some people call it crib death. By definition, it’s the sudden death of an infant less than one year of age, which remains unexplained after thorough investigation by both physician and law enforcement. SIDS is the most common cause of death in infants between the ages of one month and one year, affecting nearly one out of every 1,000 live births. There are 3,000 to 4,000 SIDS deaths in the United States per year. Approximately one baby every two hours of the day and night dies of SIDS! There is no prevention for SIDS. There is currently no cure. For my wife Valerie’s full letter, “Hope is a choice”.Click here.
Since then, we are active board members of "San Diego Guild for Infant Survival, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. We have hosted the Daly Memorial Golf Tournament every year to raise funds for SIDS research. We are proud to say that over the years we have raised > $150,000.00. Through the assistance of First Candle we have assisted numerous research studies being conducted, including those by Dr. Thomas Keens, Dr. Krous, Dr Kinney and now Dr. Topol.
Since 1999 the SIDS theories were numerous and unfocused. 2010 was a breakthrough year for SIDS research with the prevailing theory coming from the efforts of Dr. Hannah Kinney (Children’s Hospital Boston) with help from our own Dr. Henry Krous (Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego). The findings from the study indicate we are closing in on a defect in the brainstem related to serotonin as a likely cause for SIDS.
More recently, Dr. Eric Topol & Dr Emily Spencer our Researchers at Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) have launched a clinical trial aimed at cracking one of the toughest mysteries in forensic science — sudden unexplained death syndrome. Read the article Here. San Diego Guild for Infant Survival board has recently donated $7,000 to aid them in their research.
