Embryonic & Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
Embryonic stem (ES) cells are derived from embryos. Embryonic stem cells can become all cell types of the body because they are pluripotent. So they could be used to treat certain disease such as diabetes, heart disease, traumatic spinal cord injury and vision and hearing loss.
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are adult cells that have been genetically reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell-like state by being forced to express genes and factors (Oct-3/4, KLF4, SOX2, and c-Myc) in somatic cells. Like embryonic stem cells, they are able to self-renew and differentiate. iPSCs are already useful tools for drug development and modeling of diseases.
