Horse serum is a water-soluble serum component derived from equine blood. In the laboratory, horse serum is one of several increasingly popular alternative cell culturing media to fetal bovine serum (FBS), which has become prohibitively expensive in recent years.
For some uses, horse serum has even shown itself to be superior to FBS. Dendritic cells cultured using horse serum, for instance, show higher levels of viability than those cultured using FBS. A study of cultured mouse glial precursor cells also found that horse serum in the 5-10 percent concentration range achieved better rates of cell differentiation than were observed in similar concentrations of FBS.
