MES is an ultrapure zwitterionic buffer effective in a pH range of 6-8 with a pKa of 6.10 at 25ºC. MES is not absorbed through cell membranes and is transparent to UV light. MES solutions can be prepared by titrating the free acid with sodium hydroxide to the desired pH level. MES is commonly used as a running buffer for very small proteins.
