Tenellin is a yellow fungal metabolite produced by species of the genus Beauveria which belongs to the rare 4-hydroxypyridone class including a dienone side chain. The fungus causes white muscardine disease in silkworms.

It has been reported that tenellin plays an important role in iron homeostasis in the ferricrocin-deficient Beauveria bassiana. It downregulates the toxicity of iron-generated reactive oxygen species by working as an iron chelator in ferricrocin-deficient mutants Beauveria bassiana.

It suppresses Mg2+-, Ca2+-, and Na+/K+-ATPase activities in equine erythrocytes and is cytotoxic to Sf9 and Sf21 insect cells.
